Chuseok is the Korean Thanksgiving day. Date is August 15th in the lunar calendar. Chuseok falls on Sep 22th this year. Koreans usually wear hanbok (traditional Korean clothes) on Chuseok or Seollal (Korean New Year's Day). I always wear hanbok. Chuseok is giving thanks for the harvest. And Chuseok is a time for families to get together. I went to my hometown for this Chuseok. I meet all my relatives, eat lots of food. This is one of the reasons why I like Chuseok.
We are having something special things on Chuseok. First, we make a wish on the full moon. Thus we believe that our wish is come true. Second, we make special rice cake called Songpyun. Songpyun is the special food that Koreans eat on Chuseok. It is half-moon shaped and stuffed with sesame seeds and sugar, sweet beans or chestnut filling. Third, we visit our ancestors' grave. We pay respect to their ancestors by visiting their graves and offering them rice and fruit. This Chuseok our family visit my maternal grandfather’s grave. He died last year. His grave is far from our house. So we could not often visit. Forth, Chuseok have a terrible traffic jam. Every year highways were jammed with cars returning to Seoul. But this Chuseok have holidays interspersed with workdays. If we rearrange schedule, we can rest 9 day. So this Chuseok was not having traffic jam as compared with other holiday.
Chuseok is special day for Koreans. I hope that you enjoy Korea’s traditional Chuseok.
My family don't make a songpyun always buy it in market. and you look like have many relatives! I'm envy you... My grandfather hometown is North Korea so we can't visit grave. but I am no need to terrible traffic jam.
